Leader Alison Coffin to run for seat in SJE–QV: Lorraine Michael supports election bid

The Newfoundland and Labrador New Democratic Party announced today that MHA Lorraine Michael will not be seeking re-election in 2019.

Michael is stepping aside to allow the Party’s new Leader, Alison Coffin to run in the district of St. John’s East–Quidi Vidi.

“One of the most important things for the NL NDP is to have our Leader elected to the House of Assembly,” said Michael. “The district of St. John’s East–Quidi Vidi is an important home for the NDP. The Party values the district. And the voters of the district and its predecessor Signal Hill–Quidi Vidi have for over 30 years showed they value having the NDP represent them in the House of Assembly,” added Michael. “I, along with my Party, want to provide our new Leader with the best opportunity to be elected to the House of Assembly. Therefore, I am announcing today that I am stepping aside to allow our new Leader to run in St. John’s East–Quidi Vidi.”

MHA Lorraine Michael has served as the MHA for the District of St. John’s East–Quidi Vidi for 13 years. She was first elected in a by-election in 2006 when Jack Harris stepped down as Leader and MHA for the district.

In her remarks today, Alison Coffin commented on the importance of working together.

“I am humbled by the Party’s decision to grant me this opportunity,” she said. “The values of the Party are never more evident to me than when we come together to do what’s best for the Party and for the province. I am eager to run in a district where I can expect to have the support of many long-time NDP voters,” Coffin added, “and I look forward to working with Lorraine to meet the people of the district to discuss their ideas and concerns.”
