NDP President, John Whelan commented on the results from the Topsail By-Election last night saying he is very pleased with Brian Nolan’s results. Nolan attracted just over 11% of the popular vote with 374 of the 3349 votes cast.

“Brian Nolan's results are indicative of both his strength as a candidate and of the party as a whole,” said Whelan. “The voters of Topsail District have clearly shown which Party they feel is the more effective opposition in the face of a popular government.”

On the heels of an open forum on housing hosted in her district last week, NDP Leader Lorraine Michael (Signal Hill-Quidi Vidi) says her office is still receiving a large number of calls from people who cannot find affordable housing despite the apparent availability of units.

“It is frustrating for people who are in dire need of housing to drive though the city and see units that appear, from the outside, to be free,” says Michael. “The fact of the matter is that some units have been vacant for months awaiting repairs; it is taking far too long.”

Dear Friend,

I’m sure you’ve heard. Brian Nolan, long time party member, is off and running to spread the NDP message to the people of Topsail district for the March 16 By-election.

But it’s not going to be easy – especially with the Conservatives flush with cash.

That’s why I’m asking for your support today to help elect Brian who will bring the change we need to the House of Assembly.

NDP Leader, Lorraine Michael (Signal Hill-Quidi Vidi) says she is pleased to hear that Premier Danny Willliams’ surgery was a success and that he is healing well. However, his explanation of his personal choice raises questions about how people of this province can access what might be the preferred option for their health care whether or not that option exists in the province.

“I was very happy to see the Premier in good health on the NTV Evening News and to learn that he is healing well,” says Michael. “It is good for the people of the province to finally have an explanation as to why the Premier decided to travel outside the country to have his heart surgery and put an end to the ongoing questioning in the media.”
