MHA Evans to Attend Protest Calling for the Return to In-Classroom Learning for High School Students

Updated: Jan 30, 2023

For Immediate Release

25 October, 2022

NL NDP MHA for Torngat Mountains Lela Evans will be participating in a protest in Nain this afternoon at 3pm Labrador time next to the Nain School Property.

The protest is a planned action by desperate students and their parents after they held an emergency meeting last night in Nain with NL NDP MHA Lela Evans. The meeting was organized by high school students and their parents over the school board’s decision to take academic teachers from classrooms, forcing students to move to online learning. With time running out to salvage their children’s academic futures, the parents are taking immediate steps to get action from the NLESB and the Department of Education.

Parents and students are demanding a return to in-class learning for academic Math, English, and Science courses. “We weren’t consulted before this happened. The internet is too poor in Nain to have our students do these classes on-line and our students have never done CDLI courses. They put our children in crisis, mentally and emotionally. They are too far behind now to catch up even if we get fast internet. We demand our students get their in-class teachers back,” said Tracy Denniston, parent of an impacted student.

“Parents and students have my full support,” Evans said. “The snap decision to move all these students to online learning has negatively impacted their future prospects. I’m calling on the Minister of Education to get teachers back in the classroom so these students can get back on track to graduate with academic credits for post-secondary. “
