Paul Murphy

Paul was born and grew up in St. John’s where he attended school and graduated from Memorial University. He worked at various summer jobs during his university years, and obtained a position at MUN upon graduation and worked there, except for a short break as an officer in the Canadian Navy, until his retirement.

Paul worked as a Laboratory Instructor at the University for 39 years, retiring in 2010. During his first 19 years at MUN he taught labs in a general science course for primary/elementary teachers and in the next 20 years, he taught labs in various Biology courses. He served on a number of MUN Committees such as the Board of Regents Pension Committee, the MUNFA Executive and the Negotiating Committee, Audit Committee, the Executive as Treasurer for CUPE 1615 and President Morgan’s Committee on Traffic and Parking. He has served with the Boy Scouts of Canada, was a coach for St. John’s Minor Soccer and currently helps out for 3 non-profits in the St. John’s area.

Paul’s ancestors came over from Kil McGanny in Kilkenny in the mid-1700s to fish in St. John’s. Since that time, the family has endured the Great Fires 1816-7, 1846 and 1892, many crashes in fish prices, the Depression, the two World Wars, the Spanish Flu of 1918, Commission of Government, Confederation, the rule of Joey Smallwood, Muskrat Falls, the crash of the world economy in 2008 and now the COVID-19 pandemic. His family still goes on and, with your vote on February 13 , he hopes to ensure that Newfoundland and Labrador goes on as well.
