Patricia Johnson-Castle

Patricia is proud to be Inuk, as well of German and British descent. She is a second generation urban Inuk, raised in St John's, Newfoundland, who has been living in Nain since 2019.

Patricia has experience in cultural advocacy, policy, administration, having worked as the Coordinator for Indigenous Studies Program at McGill University. Patricia has been working in policy and planning for Nunatsiavut Government for the last 2 years (currently on leave).

Over the last 8 years, Patricia has worked on becoming anti-racist and supporting anti-racist causes. Very in-debted to the lessons she was able to learn from the Open Stellenbosch Collective in South Africa to learn about white privilege and how class, language, and race impact peoples experiences of the world. 

During high school and university, Patricia was a fervent British Parliamentary debater, having competed at Canadian, Pan American, Southern African, and the World Debating Championships. Combining her anti-racism work and debating, Patricia has contributed to the revisions of Equity Policies of the World Universities Debating Championship, the Austral-Asian Debating Championships, and the Canadian University Society for Intercollegiate Debate. She has also coached high school and university debate in Canada, the US, Slovenia, Rwanda, Cameroon, and South Africa.

Patricia holds a Bachelor of Arts in African studies with a Minor in Philosophy from McGill University, and a Master's of Arts in Social Anthropology from the University of Cape Town, South Africa. She currently volunteers with TaKuaKautik (the Nain Food Bank).
