Matt Smith grew up in Winterton in Trinity Bay and understands the challenges Newfoundlanders and Labradorians who live in rural areas face. He grew up in a low-middle class family with his mother and grandparents. He has experienced the struggles of single parents and working people firsthand. Matthew has always had to work hard in his life beginning at a young age. He is now a supervisor with his present employer.


Matt was educated at Perlwin Elementary in Winterton and later attended Baccalieu Collegiate in Old Perlican where he took part in sports and was student union president. He went on to attend the Memorial University of Newfoundland where he completed a broad array of courses ranging from Human Kinetics, English, Folklore, Sociology, Psychology, and Police Studies.


Matt has a lengthy list of volunteer experience with running clubs, senior complexes, the Janeway telethon, Big Brothers, and the Winterton and Torbay Volunteer Fire Departments.

Matt resides in Torbay with his wife, Ashley, and his two sons, Brody (3) and Colton (1).
